When we lived in Scottsdale, we used to hike the trail to the Hole in the Rock regularly. It is such a short easy trail that it is the perfect introductory hike for toddlers and preschoolers. At the end of this relatively tiny trail is a large open mouthed cavern that even the big kids can't resist climbing all over.
So, on Veteran's day, with an entire day open for adventure, we set off with a bunch of our cousins for a morning in the great outdoors.

This was Rebekah's first hike on her own without riding in the hiking backpack. It was great! She is ambitious and determined - which proved useful when she was presented with steps that went up to her hips. After struggling her way to the top of the trail she was elated to discover a climber's paradise in miniature.
All of the kids immediately sprawled out along the face of the rock and hurried to the highest perch.
Of the 7 cousins on the hike, Rebekah was the youngest. We also had two 4 year olds and two 7 year olds and two 9 year olds.
These 2 crazy second graders were supposed to be born on the same day. But, Meagan got in a bit of a hurry so they are 3 weeks apart. They had the most fun giggling and bringing along the little orange turtle that they named "Katelyn".
While the kids were climbing, roaming and generally slip sliding around, I took some time to relax and really enjoy the beautiful views. I breathed in the crisp fall air. And for a moment everything was just as it should be.
