Love in a Dictionary

At the dinner table last night, I asked the kids one of my usual questions:

"What was your favorite part of the day?"

Incidentally I always ask what the worst part of the day was as well.  Cause sometimes those are gems.

But today the gem came from the best part of the day.

Meagan informed us that the best part of her day was when they paired up in class to look words up in the dictionary and then use them in a sentence.  And they got to pick whatever words they wanted.

Meagan picked the word kiss.  She reported that it means to "touch lips lightly in affection or love".  Then she proceeded to giggle for several minutes.  To be thorough she also looked up the word love.  Apparently there are multiple definitions there and none struck her fancy.  So her word of the day was kiss.

Their quest led them to a synonym for kiss: smack.

Meagan's friend, Sophie, looked up the word date.  After reading all of the listed definitions, she declared to Meagan, "They have 6 definitions and none of them mean when your mom and dad go out to kiss each other!"

Awesome.

Armed with this background information, Sophie's sentence makes perfect sense:

"My mom smacked my dad on their date last night."

Imagine what her teacher thought of that one!
