Caleb came home on Thursday with a personal invitation to come and be recognized by the mayor at Fit City Saturday. He was really excited when he read that his PE coach would be receiving an award on behalf of her students. He asked me if he would be in the half of the students that received the award.
We woke up Saturday morning and headed over to downtown Scottsdale for Fit City Saturday! It was actually fun. I love it when things totally exceed my expectations. First, we went to the main stage and the mayor introduced Caleb's PE teacher and the 30 kids that have trekked (aka walked) over 25 miles cumulatively during lunch recess. This is a picture of all the kids along with the Mayor (far left), principal (grown up to the right of him) and the PE coach who was truly horrified that she had to say something to the crowd in the microphone (She has on the dark glasses). When you admire the picture, you will notice Meagan in the front row with Caleb. She didn't make the goal, but she got to stand in line with everyone because she was there with Caleb. We firmly support nepotism in our family.
Caleb was quite proud that he got to shake the mayor's hand.
They also had several activities and booths set up to demonstrate or encourage fitness. The kids played at the gymnastics area for about half an hour. Luckily, the weather was beautiful and Trader Joe's was giving away free water bottles.
One of the booths featured a couple of marines who taught the kids how to be "tough". Once they were sufficiently pumped up, they were able to attempt a pull up. With some pretty significant help, each kid earned a prize and some marine pride - HOO-RAH!
Then we headed over to the fire department's obstacle course. The kids "rescued" someone from a building and then grabbed the hoses to put out the fire.
Incidentally, another booth had fliers for their website that has a directory of all things outdoors in Maricopa county. Want to see all the splash parks in the Phoenix area? http://www.spacestoplay.org/
